Highlandtown Arts 2011
District Exhibition
@ The Creative Alliance, Schiavone Fine Art,
& Skyloft Studios
Sat, Oct 1, 2011, 6pm - 9pm
Baltimore’s Highlandtown Arts District (ha!) shows off what it’s got in a rollicking open exhibition and art walk. From resident artists at The Patterson to artists with studios in Crown Cork & Seal, Skyloft Studios or around the neighborhood, you’ll be amazed by the wealth of creativity right here in our backyard. Highlandtown artist and John Waters alum Susan Lowe announces $600 in prizes provided by Dick Blick & Nations Photo Lab at the final stop, and we present the ha! award to the indefatigable Kevin Bernhard, Pres. Highlandtown Community Association.

Artist Spotlight
Mark Supik
Mark Supik and his wife Nancy own and operate Mark Supik & Co. Woodturning in Baltimore, Maryland. A family business, the shop produces architectural millwork for historic restorations, custom turnings for furniture makers and beer taps for microbreweries.

The shop’s proximity to the Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington historic areas, provides opportunities for architectural restoration projects. In addition to stair parts, columns, and curved moldings, Mark and his staff also produce a variety of wood turned items including furniture parts, plugs, bats, back rollers, and gavels.

Mark’s shop has now become a woodturning school on weekends offering workshops for beginners and more experienced turners. Classes include not only traditional spindle and bowl technique, but specialty classes for making your own beer tap handle, fiber arts tools, or learning woodworking along side your child.
This fall at Schiavone Fine Art here in Highlandtown, Mark Supik is exhibiting How Many Bowls? in response to a challenge to turn 100 bowls from one fallen pine tree.

The derby is still accepting registration forms. It only takes about two days to build a cart...it doesn't have to be very sophisticated:
Also ha!ppening during the derby: Art by the Pint, 2pm to 7pm happening outside the Laughing Pint at Gough & Conkling. With 30 + artists participating Art by the Pint is an outdoor retrospective art exhibit featuring artists who have previously shown work at the Laughing Pint over the course of the past five years.
